Increased Storage Clearance Above Bunk Mattress

One of the first things we did in our popup was to install a memory foam mattress pad. But this extra foam created too tight of a squeeze when popping the camper down – hitting the door when placed in the storage position between the mattress and roof. So, I moved the door!

I crawled inside the camper when popped down and noticed that the door was hitting the bed, but that there was a fair amount of extra room above it (between the door and the ceiling).

So, I raised the door storage plate a tad bit (only 3/4″ or so). This gave me exactly the amount of extra room we needed to lower the popup roof down on top of both the memory foam topper and down comforter.

I've been camping regularly since I was a kid, from quick Cub/Boy Scout trips to week-long backpacking trips and everything else in-between. We got a popup camper when our kids were 1 and 3 years old to enjoy more time outdoors together alongside a few conveniences like heat and running water. Since then, we've spent over 75 nights together as a family in our popup camper. I've learned a lot about the intricacies of a popup tent camper during this time and love to share those lessons here for the benefit of others.
